The Dublin Winter Solstice festival took place just at the end of December and I’m only getting a chance to go through the photos now!
The lighting of the ceremonial fire took place in DIT Grangegorman, where the Smashing Times Theatre and Film Company also put on story telling, face painting and a ceili.
The fire was light by Slí An Chroí with the flame form the ceremonial sunrise fire at the scared site of Newgrange. Newgrange is best known for the illumination of its passage and chamber by the winter solstice sun. The sun shines in through a small opening above the chamber on the shortest days of the year, around December 21st, illuminating the entire chamber.
The theater company then put on a short dance show and we all headed in a parade towards Smithfield square. Here the fire was placed down and people were then invited to write what they would like to leave behind and invite in for the new year.
It was a really great event with great energy and fun!
Lets hope the fire listens to my wishes for the new year!
