Beltane fire festival Edinburgh

This ancient Celtic festival marks the changing of the seasons in an Iron age ritual of performance and lighting of the ceremonial Beltane bonfire.  Set on Calton hill in Edinburgh, a procession of different characters paraded and performed around the hill.

There was wild dancing, drumming and offerings made to the different characters involved. The procession stopped at various points around the hill and a performance took place. The actors were amazing! Completely in character and not holding back. The costumes, installations and art were also so well done! Beautiful pieces were present across the hill. The lighting of the fire arch was one of the most spectacular events along with the igniting of the bonfire at the end. It was a windy night and the fire was roaring around. The heat was intense from it.

Here’s a guide to the different characters on the night: Characters.

It was hard to photograph with the crowds and it being night time but here are some of my favourites from the evening. Click in and enjoy.
